Populism refers to political movements based on the belief in the power of ordinary people to affect political change. Populism took root first in the US in the1890s and then in Western Canada after the First World War. Prime Minister John Diefenbaker exemplified the populist tradition, although the Conservative Party, of which he was leader, was not a populist party.
